changes

Change happens from the bottom up, not from the top down. The more aware I become of this the more hope I have and the easier it is to see things in a positive light.

There are numerous examples of this. Politicians, for example, don't lead. They respond to changes in their constituency. Without that support, they would not take a stand, since they are consumed by thoughts of the next election and how to raise enough money to beat the other candidate.

The talking heads that dominate the media fall into the same category. Without listeners/viewers, they would lose their platform. They don't lead; they follow. the only thing they do that approaches leading is fanning a flame that is already burning.

People as diverse as Ernesto Sirolli, Margaret Mead, and Bucky Fuller hold the view that real change happens because of what one person or a small group of people do. Steve Jobs, one of the primary changers of modern life, started, literally, in a garage; the internet, which has arguably changed life for more people in more ways than anything else, was likewise started by a small group. The list goes on.

All this makes what educators (the audience Sisyphus was aimed at) and parents (The Mountain Climber) do vitally important. I could not have predicted the path my own children have taken; I have no idea what they may find on their journey.

I can't wait to see.

On the brink of the unknown - as always

Jim Hartsell
A free-form exercise, largely drawn from my work with children (where my first two books also came from). Not sure where it's going to lead - hence the title.

Here we go.
