Genre Confusion

Well I'm happy to report that I have completed the revisions on my soon-to-be-released title Cedar Hollow.
This is the first stand-alone book that I've published since my romantic trilogy which launched my writing career. I am very excited about the release of this new book which is a romantic suspense novel. I feel with each book that I've written I've grown as an author and I'm excited to present this newest book to my fans.
Romantic Suspense was a small deviation from my first three novels which I billed as Romantic Women's Fiction. The reason for not calling those books "romance" has been discussed in previous posts. I broke the "rules of romance" *laughs deviously*. But as all my readers will confirm those books were 100% romantic love stories. In this newest book I've added the element of suspense, which was a lot of fun, but not a huge deviation from previous writings. Although this new book does hold to the more traditional third person narrative.
However I am back to that annoying point in the road. The writing is done, the fun part is over, now it is time to edit, revise, format, release, promote...
But I want to write! I love to write! So I found myself mulling over new ideas, new story lines, and lo and behold before long I was back at my computer with a new story beginning to bloom.
This new storyline began as a contemporary romance (definitely within my comfort zone), but for the first time since I've begun writing I found my mind wandering. I was writing one story and began thinking of another. Something completely different. Futuristic. Possibly YA. What? I've never written YA, is that really the next direction for me to take?
Ok pause. Stop writing. Organize my thoughts. Which story is pressing on my mind the most? Which one do I want to write? Then came the dream. Of a ball, in the 1800's, two sisters the younger one beautiful and hopeful, the slightly older one much more synical. Wait a minute did I just dream of a historical romance storyline? I've never written historical romance! I've never even read that much historical romance, although I have loved several that I've read.
Now I'm even more confused than ever. Too many conflicting stories in my head... Guess it's back to the nitty-gritty of marketing and promotion for Cedar Hollow. Maybe by the time I launch that one the rest will have worked itself out...
