The Chilly and Darksome Vale of Years

Odd headline, isn't it? Doesn't exactly ring a bell, I'll bet. It's a phrase of Nathaniel Hawthorne's from one of his Twice-Told Tales. It's his anniversary birth date July 4. Lots of fans are reading his short stories and novels this week.

So, for Tuesday's Tale of Terror, I'm featuring Dr. Heidegger's Experiment.

And as a bonus, you can see the film version with Vincent Price. Vintage, classic, and a kick back in time.

Stop by Tales of Terror

Werner Paula, I'm a Hawthorne fan, and I really like "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment." Glad to see it featured here! (And I didn't know that Hawthorne was born on July 4; that's an interesting factoid.)

Re film versions, I've seen the Encyclopedia Britannica version (we have it here at the Bluefield College library). I can recommend it; I'd say it adapts the original as well as it can be in the dramatic form.

Paula Cappa Oh I'm so glad you mentioned this. Yes, I thought the Britannica version was done exceptionally well. The Vincent Price adaption is just a hoot. Does your library feature displays for authors based on birth dates? Sometimes I think it's the only way to remember and honor the authors in our history.

Werner No, Paula, at the BC library, we've never done much with displays. That's not a bad idea to think about, though; thanks for suggesting it!

Paula Cappa My pleasure. Next week is Thoreau's birth date, July 12. I can't feature him on my Tales of Terror, but I do hope to post some tweets to get him attention.
