RIP VAN WINKLE WAKES UP
Not only was I given an iphone recently, but I haven't had a camera since... 2003? I grew up used to not having one, and just never caught up. It hasn't been hard, as people take pics of everything i might want to see, most of the time. AND I haven't been to comic con since.. 2007 or something? I've never done one of those con report blog posts! so here you have it!
The Cartoon Utopia in San Diego 2013:
I never really did meet Kim Thompson. I may have chatted with him & Gary at some beach party back in the highwater days, but had never been introduced as Ron Regé, the cartoonist. The books this company puts out have shaped my life continuously since 1985. (That's why I asked to have the classic logo put on the back of my book...)
I know they make everything in lego, but my impression of the current state of stuff seems to be this mega shark-jumped bottom barrel of wild reboots and crossovers? Have they made an everything version of everything yet? I saw a poster for the new hotwheels x-wing fighter. It was designed 70's in a 90's kinda way? I do wish the new Jem & The Holograms doll looked more exciting...
It feels weird posting a picture of this giant corporate balloon, but well, she looks cool! I wish I made that! I got to finally see how the costumes have totally taken over, and well, I really like it actually. I won't be there as a civilian again. I'll at least wear my disco jacket. Geez. A place where people dress fantastic can never be all bad. These two are from a video game called Journey? I tagged this #robedfigure on instagram and the only other thing that came up was a picture of them at another location. hm..
I have a huge stack of Cartoon Utopia postcards at home, and would've liked to have handed them to people I saw who might dig some cartoon utopia. Sorry Fanta, I forgot to pack them.
Being outside was kinda rad, where the street fair public meshed with Captain Riker annoyed and in a hurry with his Jack in the Box head. Crowds just streaming by the megaphone of this crew of tough bible dudes like they weren't even there. The guys with the zod and anti religion signs showed up and it was a shouting riot for like 20 minutes. Huge crowds of nerds shouting down the Jesus people. 20-30 people taking pictures of it - but still this mermaid girl is posing right in the middle of it, oblivious. It was like flipping through cable channels in real life. I was definitely entertained.
I jumped up during my signing to get a picture of this lady with my book, just based on the rainbow frills of her outfit, but was amazed to learn she was dressed as Shelley Duvall from Rock n' Rhymeland! What? Radness! (anybody who knows me knows that Shelley is my way fave).
Is this lady dressed as this thing?
I looked at some She-Ra cells
and what are these?
This Wonder Woman art was the coolest thing I saw. I've been drawing some pictures of Diana lately, and have also been into the spiritual power of the spiral spinning cross. I was excited to run into Hippolyte, too. I spared her from asking about the strands of her magic girdle, or how Hercules actually kills her in the Greek myth, but she gets to live and make a super hero out of clay in the comic book. ha
I've been entranced with pulp golden age covers lately, especially the babes. Can somebody please send me a phantom lady collection or something? Is there a good book of them all together? Sun Girl and the Blonde Phantom & especially Miss Fury? I need that stuff.
I was with johnny Ryan & we saw this Donald Duck comic.
I fully intended to buy this $5 copy of Gasp! but I somehow got pulled along in the ocean and never swam back (the same thing happened with getting pics of the Ben Jones truck!)
It includes this story where a sea-witch ghost turns a guy to stone & levitates him while he's sleeping and bashes him into frankenstein. He wakes up feeling refreshed on the next page. It's like a Kupperman comic or something!
Oh! Look out Jonah! Also looks Kupperman-esque. Right? haha
I did a signing with Ellen Forney and our books look real good together!
On the train ride back to LA I took pictures of the comics that Steve Weissman bought. That's all! Thanks everybody! comic con was fun
