The sergeant and private mentioned in this article were actually a corporal and a batman. The batman died, and the corporal was Tommy, who got shot in the shoulder. I turned up this article in my research on Dodging Shells in 2008. That was how Tommy learned, 65 years later, that he had, indeed, killed the two German machine-gunners.
