My Dinner with Jeff (Bezos)
Dear All,
Only three days ago, I launched two pivotal firsts.
Number one is: my first self-published cookbook, When Bakers Cook. The second first (so to speak) is I published my first cooking book, as a baking author. Because every baking author has at least one great cooking book in them. When Bakers Cook is mine.
For those who don't know me, I am a cookbook author and master baker, and the host of www.betterbaking.com, since 1997.
I've written other traditional cookbooks with illustrious publishers but for reasons too numerous to expand on here, I opted to self publish this newest creation.
Over a year in the producing, three years of recipe testing, creating and it all came down to a click (a held breath) and presto, what was a twinkle in my author's imagination is now a print book. In addition to being a Ten Speed author, Random House, Harper Collins, Oxmoor House and Whitecap Books author, I am now, officially, an Amazon author.
Thank you Jeff Bezos.
Why? Because when I chose Amazon (aka CreateSpace to produce my produce and distribute my cookbook, (CS is part of Amazon) and (soon) Kindle to publish the companion Ebook, I chose to embark on an incredible adventure and I also chose a formidable dance partner.
Amazon is big, wild and wooly. And oddly, personal. Real people work there and they are pretty helpful. And when the going got really wooly, wonky and I wondered if my book would see the light of day (or if I would get stuck on the ISBN debacle forever), I wrote Jeff Bezos (he invented and owns Amazon). Turns out, he reads his mail.
Good thing for me.
My email to Amazon begot a response, a series of phone calls and then a whole bunch of more wonderful people jumped in and helped When Bakers Cook (my newest offspring) get to the finish line. Just in time for Christmas. And just in time to be included in the Washington Post's Best Cookbooks of 2013. But mostly, just in time for people to cook with. Because that is really all I ever wanted to do - get everyone in the cooking, baking pool with me, having a great time.

Actually, the book jacket says "Over 175 Recipes' but midway through the final editing I got nervous there weren't enough recipes and so I did what every zealous, over-the-top cookbook author does: I added 6-10 more recipes. I still hear the incredulous shriek of disbelief from my volunteer testers who spent one more feverish weekend testing chicken pot pie, buttermilk pecan waffles and Greek Yogurt Cheesecake.
So stay tuned, as I share more about being a writer, a cookbook author and chef - and about this special new cookbook.

Any plans to release ebook editions of "..Jewish Holiday Baking" or "The New Best of BetterBaking.com" via Amazon?
Have enjoyed your recipes (as well as your wit and wisdom) since back in your Baker Boulanger days, as well as Clabber Girl, and of course BetterBaking. I wish you continued success in all your efforts!
