The power of a single thought

Within the past six to nine months, my wife, Judy, has become quite the coupon cutter. She's done her share of reading up on how to maximize savings, learning how to combine more than one coupon, along with a BOGO from the store, to get items either very cheap, free, or sometimes, even getting money back for buying it! A lot of people are doing this, so it's hardly ground-breaking, but I'm still impressed when she comes home with a load of groceries and tells me she saved 80%.
At the start of the year she mentioned creating a spreadsheet to document all the freebies she got throughout the year. It would be an interesting way to quantify her efforts. A few days after that, Judy, our 12 year old son Jared and I, began talking about resolutions for the new year. We decided it would be great if we could take the freebies Judy gets, and donate them to those in need. That idea let to one of buying one item per week and donating it. By the end of the year, we'd have 52 items, and all of the freebies to donate too.
Finally, we thought, what if we could get ten friends to make the same commitment? The potential for making a big impact began to dawn on us. We got very excited about the idea and launched a Facebook page dedicated to it. We call it "Project Sunshine". The day after it launched, I went to work and was given nine items and a stack of coupons by two of my friends! I was somewhat overwhelmed at how a simple thought, and a little bit of effort, can start a chain-reaction so quickly!
Jared likes the idea because he says it makes his heart happy to be able to help others. He will be in charge of keeping track of what we receive and categorizing it. He also wants to set up meetings with managers of local food pantries to see how we can help the most.
Project Sunshine may not save the world, but it may help someone, somewhere. We want to see what we can accomplish. Right now our goal is to collect 520 items by the end of the year.
My point with this is simply how amazing a thought can be when there is action behind it. The smallest combination of the two can make the biggest difference. Everything starts as a thought.

Thanks for reading!
