Celebrate a Child's Uniqueness

I'm a visual person, and I was inspired by this painting by Victoria LeFevre of Victoria's Art Visions:

So much of a child's young life is spent trying to stay within the lines defined by school, home, peers, that I thought it was time to post something about what it's like if you can't stay within those defined lines. What tends to happen is a label is quickly slapped on you:  'You are different'. Well I say celebrate difference! Celebrate uniqueness! If you can't keep your colours inside the lines - draw new lines!
Having the confidence to draw new lines can sometimes take time to create; boldness and daring aren't always the automatic response when a child is challenged for her difference. In my play therapy practice I see children struggling to embrace and accept their difference:  initially they will push against the boundaries I set thinking that this is the only way they can express their difference. It takes time for them to recognise this difference as their voice!
Over time they will learn for themselves that they can draw new lines within those boundaries! This usually takes a minimum of 12 sessions for them to understand.
If your child is struggling with this issue, you might like to suggest they read something different.
