History of Gulab gang (source: wikipedia)
The Gulabi gang was founded by Sampat Pal devi, a mother of five and former government health worker (as well as a former child bride), as a response to widespread domestic abuse and other violence against men. Gulabis visit abusive husbands and shoot them with AK47s (guns) unless they stop abusing their wives.
In 2008, they stormed an electricity office in Banda district and forced officials to turn back on the power they had cut in order to extract bribes. They have also stopped child marriages and protested dowry and female illiteracy.
The group, which the Indian media portray positively, was reported to have 20,000 members as of 2008, as well as a chapter in Paris, France.
MY REVIEW:
My papers are from this Monday so I must be having tight study schedule and why not? I am one of the engineering students who use to get his notes photocopy one week prior to exams. So it becomes quite my duty to give those notes- ‘a sometime’. But why am I discussing this here. It is a same old story of every engineering student. So, let me tell you something new. Today, I was sitting with Kaustubh (My best buddy) in class and it was like never ending and back breaking experience to sit in class from 8 a.m. to don’t know till when? It was 1:30 p.m. and we were praying to god like Please god let this half hour pass in peace and harmony, we will not be seen near this class again (At least for today). So as clock rings 2:00 p.m. and professor put his feet outside class, we ran from class like any culprit from prison. Soon, we were in Omaxe mall standing in row to buy tickets for Gulaab Gang. Later on, we watched it too.
The movie starts with a little girl ‘Rajoo’(Madhuri Dixit) who was forced by her step mom not to study and to do household chores. Later on, that little girl turn out to be so rigid that she keeps on studying by her own efforts and determination and one day she found ‘Gulaab Gang’. Gulaab gang is a group by few ladies who wear Pink sarees produced by themselves. They are powerful, commanding, controlling and independent and make their decisions by own and punish those who hurt, harm or torture common people. They are punitive and punishing to people who promote or do domestic abuse and other violence against women.
In movie, this gang lives in a small place like any ashram or gurukul in a small village Madhopur and their head is Rajoo devi- MADHURI DIXIT where she teaches small girls their alphabets, and grown-up girls how to wield a `lathi’. Their gang helps nearby villagers by fighting for their rights. They fight with government officials for common people, as govt. officials were demanding bribe for providing them electricity.
As one common village girl is raped by Ministr’s son, so Gulaab gang punished him by cutting his legs, ears, male part and other parts. This way they help many people this way. Movie take up its pace when Juhi Chalwa as Cabinet minister came into existence. After that, lot of turns and twists are there. She has been showed as the person who takes up benefit of every situation and people for her welfare only. As she said in the movie that she is a person of ‘timing’ who takes ‘right steps at right time’, but in last, it all takes her in strenuous situations and movie ends with a positive message. That is, winning of Gulaab Gang and locking up Smitra Devi (Juhi chawla) in a locker.
Now coming on the Direct Review:
I must appreciate the idea for this movie by Shomek Sen as there are very less movies which raise the voice for/of women.
Shomek Sen did a decent job in storyline, still little overrated but at last you will find it good. This movie is totally on the feminist view and I found it worth watch. As earlier we were not sure whether we should watch ‘Gulaab Gang’ or ‘Total Siyapa’but at the end I found our decision right J
Madhuri Dixit played a role of Rajoo Devi and her acting is flawless and awesome. She did her role perfectly and gave her 100% in every scene. It is the factor which keeps you wondering for what next??
Juhi Chawla played a role of Sumitra Devi (a politician). Frankly saying, I didn’t like her acting. At many places, I found her giving vague expression. She wasn’t impressive. Even her role was awesome and she could give much better. May be, it is because of long gap from movies or what? But she wasn’t impressive at many places.
There is one character of Mahi in this movie. I really liked her simple views and fundas about life. There are many tremendous dialogues in movie which will make you laugh and clap. There are many one liners too. You will feel yourself connected with the movie throughout and you will start imagine yourself as a member or head of Gulabi Gang (Like I did).
At last, I will say that it is a good movie. You can give it a chance and it will not disappoint you.
My Ratings: 3.25/5
Thanks.
