Just How Did I Spend My Summer Vacation?

It’s that time of year again when we get to say, “It’s August already? What happened to summer?”

Yeah, I can’t answer that question with much specificity, either. I do recall spending one glorious spring week on the California coast, then I started research for a new book, then there was the Pop Culture Witches program in the barn at the Tuck Museum…I did some writing…got the flu and missed the Marelli’s Market 100th anniversary picnic…then the next thing I know it’s the end of July and I’m exhibiting at the New England Book Expo where I met authors from all walks of life – paranormal investigators, WWII survivors, vampire romance novelists, Comic Con types with book titles like “Fetal Cloud,” and even cookbook authors.

Speaking of cookbook authors, the highlight of the event was meeting Mary Ann Esposito, the host of the long-running TV show Ciao Italia. While she was there for her own book signing, she bought a copy of The Mark of Goody Cole for her daughter. In return we presented her with a copy of Karen Raynes and Marcia Hannon-Buber’s book, Marelli’s Market: The First 100 Years in Hampton New Hampshire. But did I get a photo of us together? Of course not!

Another interesting moment was meeting publicist Jan Lewis. She hosts a show called “Be My Guest” that airs on public TV. She bought a copy of The Mark and the next day invited me for an interview to talk about the book. So in a few weeks I’ll be trekking to Upton, MA for my very first TV interview.

Meanwhile, I’m busy researching and writing (of course!) and working on the Hampton Historical Society’s second Tavernwalk in downtown Hampton. Which reminds me to remind you to ~

Save the Date! On Saturday, October 11, 2014 the Hampton Historical Society will once again prove that learning history can be a fun, enjoyable experience.

With a late 19th century theme of “Hustlers, Bustlers, Titans, Tramps, and Teetotalers,” the Tavernwalk will feature costumed historical figures of bygone Hampton along with Victorian-era fare at the Galley Hatch, 401 Tavern, Savory Square, and Old Salt restaurants. 100-year-old Marelli’s Market will have an old-time vendor’s cart with (what else?) nuts and candy.

History on the Square will feature a pictorial display of the major events happening in Hampton during the latter part of the 19th century, such as moving the Hampton Academy and downtown buildings, the advent of the street railway, the Casino, the Odd Fellows Hall, and the mile-long bridge. Meet an oil tycoon, an irascible Civil War general, an early woman lawyer, and a muckraking journalist; get your fortune told by the gypsy on the square, but watch out for the wandering tramps and aggressive Temperance ladies!

All participants will take on the persona of a late 19th century Hampton person, so costumes are encouraged!

The cost is $15 and tickets will be available at all restaurant locations on the day of the event. This is a 21 and over event.
