I recently read an article regarding a new form of intelligence that psychologists are now studying in more earnest: Emotional Intelligence. The basic premise is that successful and well-adjusted individuals have a better grasp on the ebbs and flows of their emotions, thereby allowing them to avoid the inevitable distractions that result from the vicissitudes of human nature. I agree wholeheartedly that emotions can be a huge distraction from professional and personal endeavors, however, it is precisely those ups and downs in life that enrich our human experience. Emotions are powerful tools that hold the potential for great insight if one is able to discern the source and effect of the emotion on our action. If we remove our connection to those powerful waves of energy, then we are diminishing the overall experience of life. We turn a roller coaster into a pony ride. I don't think life should be a constant thrill ride, but it should be more exciting than mastering the art of keeping your emotions chained and caged like a circus animal.
