Librarypalooza

I spent last Saturday in San Antonio, TX at Librarypalooza...an author event that was attended by over a thousand eager, young readers. The authors with me were Carl Deuker, James Dashner, Laura Lee Gulledge, Marissa Meyer, Siobhan Vivian and Jenny Han.

Whenever I attend an author event like this one I lament that I never had anything like this happen when I was a kid. I have to believe that was because when I was young we didn't have the wealth of middle grade and YA fiction that exists today. So young readers out there...you don't know how great you have it!

I recommend that wherever you live, you should check with your local bookstores or your school librarians for information about similar events that may be happening near you. There's a good chance that one of your favorite authors might be coming to your neck of the woods. Or ask your school librarian to try and arrange an author visit to your school. You'd be amazed how many authors do that all the time. Even if it's a Skype visit. If you're a reader, or a writer, access to your favorite authors isn't as difficult as you might expect. (Unless it's J.K. Rowlings or somebody like that. Don't hold your breath there)

Ramona It is wonderful that children of all ages have so much more in the way of books, internet activities, etc. then we did, when I was growing up. I just wish, as a semi-retired Library Aide, that our library, like many small ones, could afford the author's visits. It is rare that we would have a really famous author, of YA or JF literature, make a visit to our library. I would like to encourage these authors to consider this. Blogs are great, but seeing you in person is another whole enchilada...and great for kids who don't have computers...believe it or not...many children in our community do not have computers, in their homes. Thank you

D.J. MacHale When authors are on tour, there's no expense to the school. The publisher picks up all the expenses. And Skype visits to schools are usually free as well. Schools should contact their local bookstores and ask to be put on the list for author visits.

Ramona Thank you. A wonderful suggestion. I am thinking not too many authors come our way, as we have never had a children's author visit our Public Library in the ten years I have worked there. We have great children's Librarians, and if there was a free author visit out there, they would have known about it. Any ideas as to what author would be out our way this coming year...Salisbury, North Carolina. Thank you again. "Just a lowly Librarian Assistant"
