2016: Day One.
It’s January 1st, 2016! Like I posted a couple of days ago on the relaunch, that means new drive, ambition and hard work is to kick off today! And guess what, I spent all day working hard, writing non-stop, being creative and full of self respect and admiration for myself!
Of course, I’m lying to you. I didn’t do any of that.
But that’s okay, good things don’t happen over night. Or even over just a couple of days. I’m here, and I’m typing to you, and that’s what counts, ultimately.
I’m not much of a resolutionist. I am a bit of a fatalist, but setting resolutions for the new year never held much sway with me. Generally, they’re promises made publicly and personally and quickly swept under the carpet from fear of guilt from not acting on any of these said promises. It sucks. We all do it. So I choose not to do it. Instead, I like to think of my self as the type of person that after turning things over in my head an obsessive amount and reaching a certain stage of self loathing, I finally see changes that need to be made in myself and set out to make those changes.
2015 was a bad year. It just wasn’t good. I’m still alive, I still have a loving wife and daughter, great parents and good friends. But it was a shitty year overall. Major job changes after seventeen years for the same employer. Some heavy deaths in the family that rocked us all to our cores. Financial strains, lost goals, loss of things as my self body image as I succumbed to depression and lost all the hard work I put in bettering my health.
Yeah, it was a shitty year.
But that doesn’t mean that 2016 has to be. I’m declaring 2016 a year of change.
Here’s some things I’d like to accomplish this year:
Return to Fiction. – I haven’t written fiction in a good long time. I miss it and I think I found some ways to fix the things that frustrated me the last time around.
Return to Non-Fiction. – It’s high time I moved forward on some projects I’ve had percolating for years now. A bit of a auto biography/memoir on what led me to be a professional geek? Some books on movies and such for film geeks? A print anthology of Cinema Fromage from over the years? You know, stuff.
Read More. – I love to read. I love stories. I’ve let it get away from me.
Eat Less. -I’m an emotional eater. Dealing with a year or more of depression, you can imagine how that’s worked out. I kind of hate myself for it.
Be more positive. – Stop expecting the worst. There is a lot of good in your life, dude.
Like myself more. – People seem to like me. I have a lot of friends and a lot of fans out there in the internet world. It’s time I decide to like myself along with them. This is a hard one for me.
Write more. – I don’t care what it’s about! You can’t accomplish goals one and two with out this one. Open up. Here, in private, wherever you can get somebody to read it.
Continue podcasting. – I love podcasting. I think I’m pretty decent at it. I want to continue that trend!
Push yourself as a personality. – This goes along with the podcasting. It’s time to evolve. I have ideas. We’ll see how this goes. (Look out Kevin Smith, I’m coming for you.)
So, there you go. A few things that weigh upon my brain to kick off the new year. I hope that whether you like;resolutions, goals, nothing in particular… that they all go well for you. You deserve it. As much as I do.
Let’s tell some stories together this year. Let’s make some stories happen.
