Yes I am like you, it's impossible to name just one, but two that spring to mind are Carson McCullers 'The Heart is a Lonely Hunter ' and Wallace Stegner's 'Angle of Repose'. As for Oregon I passed through once in 1998 on my way from San Francisco to Seattle, the landscape was awe-inspiring!, I stayed overnight in Portland and found the people most friendly.
