Roger Pepper I agree Roots is probably one of the greatest books ever. What surprises me is that Alex Haley never wrote much else. But I guess he got sucked into the lecture circuit, and perhaps he put everything he had into Roots. The book is stunning in its scope and depth of the tragic issue of slavery. It's a case of the book being much better than the movie, and the movie was good.

Bonnie Calhoun Alex (whom I met back then) was writing it to chronicle his family's real story. He didn't do it to become an author, so that was the relevant point to him.
