Roger Pepper asked Bonnie S. Calhoun:

I'd be interested to hear what you think of Roots. I read it. Couldn't put it down. The depth of characterization. particularly of Chicken George, was absolutely amazing.

Bonnie S. Calhoun Roger, I originally read the book Roots when it came out in 1976. My perception of what I read at the age of 26 is probably not very applicable today, since I wasn't a writer then, and I am now. The story itself affected me deeply, just like it affected most of the country, as a compelling saga of a journey of life and man's inhumanity to man. The circumstances transcend the writing no matter how eloquently it was written, and add to the depth. I could probably easily feel today that it was the greatest story every written...besides the Bible :-)
