[close] This is a group to explore the esoteric writings of The Catcher In The Rye through the lens of WW1 and WW2. To define that I take a quote from Philosophy Between The Lines "An esoteric writer or writing would involve the following characteristics: first, the effort to convey certain truths—the “esoteric” teaching—to a select group of individuals by means of some indirect or secretive mode of communication; second, the concomitant effort to withhold or conceal these same truths from most people; and third (a common but not strictly necessary characteristic) the effort to propagate for the sake of the latter group a fictional doctrine—the “exoteric” teaching—in place of the true doctrine that has been withheld." In Decadence: And Other Essays on the Culture of Ideas (1921) THE DISASSOCIATION OF IDEAS Jhere are two ways of thinking. One can either accept current ideas and associations of ideas, just as they are, or else undertake, on his own account, new associations or, what is rarer, original disassociations. The intelligence capable of such efforts is, more or less, according to the degree, or according to the abundance and variety of its other gifts, a creative intelligence. It is a question either of inventing new relations be- tween old ideas, old images, or of separating old ideas, old images united by tradition, of considering them one by one, free to work them over and arrange an infinite number of new couples which a fresh operation will disunite once more, and so on till new ties, always fragile and doubtful, are formed. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semiotics https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argot
