The book club, the high school teacher or college professor, the parent, the extremely bossy friend... someone pushed these books on you, and you were unexpectedly pleased.

Technically, I can't vote, because no one has ever MADE me read anything...other than Tw-ehem (thanks a bunch, cousin.) And I will never vote Tw-ehem.

Yeah, this is a hard list to vote on. I can't vote for most of the books I absolutely love, because I wasn't forced to read them.
I guess I'm in the minority, but I'd probably never have read most of my favourites were it not for the required reading at uni...
I'm never really FORCED to read anything, and I don't usually take anyone's reccommendations (even my best friend's), but when I DO take them, most of the time, I like the book.
For me it isn't MADE me read just, it is my kids reading it (Harry Potter) and telling me how good it was and my niece saying (Twilight series)" you've got to read this this". Lion, the Witch and the wardrobe was school assignment so got me interested in the series
I pretty much take everyones recommendations into consideration and almost always read what others suggest. Most of the time it is a nice surprise. I would hope that others take my recommendations into consideration as well.

There are so many books I wish to see on the top positions, but I cannot vote for them... Luckily my dad put '1984' in my hands, so I can rightfully vote for it!!
I added The Book Thief... and then I realized 33 people already voted on it. YEAH!!!Why would you be happy someone made you read Twilight? 0.o

I agree, there's always such a thing as freedom of choice :-) My votes, therefore, are for books I probably wouldn't have known about/read if good friends hadn't recommended them to me.

I remember, in Freshman year, after being forced to read "To Kill a Mockingbird", which I fucking LOATHED, we had to read "The Odyssey" (abridged, obviously) and I thought it would be awful, but I actually took a liking to it. It was an engrossing tale, even for a high schooler with a short attention span
I am a lot older the most of you but the ones I did read were mostly classics I was never forced to read a book but they took me to great places in not so good onesI only have a high school education and always wanted one but reading helped me to in so many ways and it became a passion for me
I don't know why I just said all of this but I think its because that you all have that same passion

Many of the books on this list I have read or are on my tbr. I have just copied and pasted the ones I dont have marked as want to read to see if I will add them in the future.

Anyone can add books to this list.
