Susanna - Censored by GoodReads "Sir Walter Raleigh" is usually spelled with an "i." (These days, anyway; Elizabethan spelling was fluid and flexible. Dozens of different spellings of that name were used at the time.)

Petey Hi Susanna -

I always appreciate proofreading/editing comments including this one. I had always spelled Sir Walter's last name w/ an "i" also until I recently read "Sir Walter Ralegh" by Robert Lacey. On page 11 of that book, in a one page section called "Ralegh's Name," Lacey states, "The form most usually adopted, Raleigh, was in fact never once used by Walter himself. From 9 June, 1584, when he was thirty, until his death he consistently signed himself Ralegh..."

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Yes, I am aware.

On the other hand, it's the common spelling used today, and my guess is a lot of people's immediate reaction would be "that's a misspelling."

(I think the only usage that really bothered me was a modern bio of him, which spelled it "Raleigh" in the title and on the cover, but "Ralegh" in the text. Make up your mind!)
