Almost voted for the Canterbury Tales and Shakespeare, and then realized it's all novels.

Removed because they made the "Great American Read" list: Harry Potter Box Set
The Lord of the Rings
Jane Eyre
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
To Kill a Mockingbird
ETA: Adding link to the list of the books that were actually selected for the list by PBS.
A Wrinkle in Time is on there twice (1 and 43). Also, I think Macbeth should be removed, as well as the nonfiction at the bottom. Novels only, right?
Non-fictions and memoirs on the list:Diary of Anne Frank
The Glass Castle
Bitter is the New Black
Humanism - The Whore of Babylon and the Sleeping Church (although I suspect someone will keep putting this one back)
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
Everything You Ever Wanted: A Memoir
Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened
Splendors Of China's Forbidden City: The Glorious Reign Of Emperor Qianlong
Lost on Planet China
T.H. White's the Once and Future King (about the novel)
When You Were Born in China: A Memory Book for Children Adopted from China

Deleted the nonfiction books mentioned above and 1984 and Frankenstein which are on the list for The Great American Read and therefore shouldn't be on the What They Missed list. :)

Wuthering Heights is on here, and it is on the official list too. Just a different edition. I'm not able to edit the list so can someone grab that one?

Lonesome Dove and Gone with the Wind were removed because they are on The Great American Read list.

I erased my reply. I've been watching the votes on the list for the finalists and have been pleased to see that most of those I consider of lesser quality are towards the bottom of the list. My faith in Goodreads members grows!

T.H. White's the Once and Future King by Elisabeth Brewer
This is literary criticism of the novel. I suspect someone wanted to add the novel. Oops.
Also Julius Caesar is a play.
NIght and Farewell to Manzanar are nonfiction and as much as I love them, they should both be removed from this list of fiction.
Julie wrote: "NIght and Farewell to Manzanar are nonfiction and as much as I love them, they should both be removed from this list of fiction."Farewell to Manzanar has been removed. Night has been removed too. Took me a while longer to find, so next time, please, mention the author, the current number you noticed it at, or give a link :-)
246 Rebecca is on the PBS list.Non Fiction - 236 Miracle Worker, 260 Last Lecture, 251 Dances with Wolves, 341 Sweet Potatoes Queens.
Thanks for making this list.

Thanks for making this list."
Except for Dances with Wolves (of which I'm not sure it is non-fiction) I've removed all of the above.
Also, the BFG. I dont think that was on the PBS list, but it was the one that made me devour all of Dahl!
Jim wrote: "Les MisérablesCan't imagine how this one got missed! One of the great classics of all time."
Jim - It IS on list, currently 204
Many of these books were not selected because they are not novels - eg, the works of Shakespeare and Edgar Allen Poe.

Thanks.
"The help" was on the "Great American Read" list and should be removed. It's a 211 at the time of this posting.

It has been removed.
The rules of The Great American Read list included the restriction that only one book per author on the list: only one Jane Austen, only one Steinbeck, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Faulkner, Twain, Ann Ryan, Dostoevsky, Agatha Christie, Stephen King, Dickens, and so on. That restriction creates an interesting twist for debate. For example, I would have picked Stephen King's The Shining over The Stand and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn over The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. I do concur with the representation of Fitzgerald, Austen, and Christie. Other opinions on the representations and omissions.
