Mostly, a part for the whole, as in The Hand that Rocks the Cradle. Now I learn that it can be the whole for the part, the general for the specific and vice versa. Best would be to consult a book on Classical Rhetoric. Jefferson employed synechdoche when he wrote,
"The god who gave us life gave us liberty at the same time; THE HAND OF FORCE may destroy, but cannot disjoin them."
i have heard it said that the essence of insult is synechdoche, as when, to belittle someone, I call him a {vulgar word for penis, buttocks, etc.}.
