I read some of these in high school (all the Shakespeare), but none in college. Some I read while I was in high school/college; not because they were assigned but because they fit my interests at the time. Many are classics I have more recently challenged myself to read. Others I have never heard of!
The novels I read were because I was doing English Literature papers. Women's fiction, Modern (20th century) Fiction, Romantic Literature, Renaissance Literature etc etc. And later on, some were for my 3 Writing diplomas - Diploma in Creative Writing, Advanced Diploma in Creative Writing (Novel) and Graduate Diploma in Creative Writing (Novel). We looked at very eclectic ranges of work from popular fiction to what is often termed 'classic'. I didn't enjoy them all but I'm glad I can say I've read them!
I've read a number of these, but most of them weren't in college. I read most of them either before or after my college years (mostly before). lol

Lucky, or perhaps unlucky (in some cases) you! "Mostly lucky since I liked a good chunk of them, though there's def a few standout exceptions that I absolutely hated. lol

I also had to read many of these in high school. I can't imagine being asked to read Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in college.

Sometimes a book is set at University level to show as a 'what not to do' when it comes to writing. You read a book and then you pick it apart...
I could only envision reading Harry Potter in grad school if one were doing a specialization in children's literature.

That makes sense.
