Listopia > Philological Circles of Discord
You - "Why would anyone actually want to sit around a table and talk about a book they've read? It seems especially ridiculous now that everything's gone haywire."
Prof. Yamada - "In recent years, amateurs have been burying the cultural capital of the ancient texts by reducing them to mystical objects, to be quarantined in public libraries. Bloggers have reduced the Greek classics into nothing more than trendy barbecues for people to talk about how they're going to live their lives... I personally find it quite disgusting."
You - "So, you don't like the idea of a book club?"
Prof. Yamada - "Of course not! It's a big waste of time, and it's vulgar! These amateurs can't even begin to understand that an intelligent conversation about these texts is a means of exploring the world as it is, that it's a method for releasing the ideas contained in the material. It's a disgrace to the cultural heritage and the personal dignity of the person who studies these texts."
You - "Well in that case this *is* just like a regular book club."
Prof. Yamada - *Smiles indulgently*. "Yes."
