I've added Judith by Aritha van Herk, although I'm not sure that book qualifies as you mentioned the women have to be role models (Judith is about a female farmer but the story is fictional and not about a role model...)

I do believe that fictional characters can be role models, can demonstrate perspectives, lives, realities outside of our own and create the adjacent possible in our own lives.
