By the way, I don't consider Tibet part of China, even though the Chinese do.

OK, I deleted the books dealing strictly with Tibet, though I'd added them not from the Chinese perspective ("this is ours, even though it's a barbaric, rebellious hinterland") but because I think as an issue, the fate of Tibet IS intrinsically linked to China itself, and hence, forms a crucial point in seeking to understand China. Therefore, I'm also leaving Goldstein's The Snow Lion and the Dragon: China, Tibet, and the Dalai Lama.

Btw, Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China is a memoir, not fiction ...

What other fiction books do you think you're already seeing on the list?

Thanks. Mexico's future is intrinsically linked to the future of the US but it is unrealistic for Mexico to claim they own the southwestern US. Those times are gone.

Precisely. And consequently, as friends with first hand insight tell me, a widely-held view in mainland China, even among Chinse who have lived and traveled abroad, and who nevertheless wholeheartedly buy into the notion of the superiority of the Han Chinese.

FWIW (and I regret even having to emphasize this), it's not a view I share; nor do I believe China had any business annexing Tibet in the first place. The fact, however, is that they did; and though the Tibetans themselves might very much hope those times were gone, they manifestly are not.

Maybe a more apppropriate title for this list would be "Pre-1950 Mainland China for the Non-Chinese"?

Please remove The Ghost Bride. It's set in Malaya, not China.
