I really loved Open This Little Book, but I'm not sure it is eligible for the Caldecott. The Illustrator, Suzy Lee, was born, educated, and works in Korea, so probably would not be eligible, which is a shame, because it is a great book, and I really love the illustrations, and highly recommend it.

Once again a really good book has been added to the list that is sadly ineligible for the Caldecott. Anything Is Possible is a very well illustrated book, and I would probably consider it for my list, but it is not eligible for at least three reasons that I see. 1) It's illustrator is not from the U.S, and does not live in the U.S.; 2) It was first published in Italy, and then later translated to English and published in the U.S.; and lastly, and certainly the main reason it is ineligible, is 3) it was originally published in 2011, so it is not published in 2013.

Suzy Lee's website says that she currently lives in Seoul, Korea, so Open This Little Book will not be eligible.

I don't think Little Owls Orange Scarf is eligible.

This is a good question, since the illustrator of the book currently resides in Ireland. In doing some research it appears she is from North Carolina, and would therefore be eligible. There are a few non-eligible books that seem to have made this list. I may be wrong on some of them, so if you know something I don't about the Illustrator's eligibility, please respond. One book that I really liked was The King of Space, but is illustrated by Jonny Duddle, who is a resident of Wales (http://www.jacketflap.com/jonny-duddl...).
Another book that I believe to be ineligible is
Herman and Rosie, written and illustrated by Gus Gordon, who is from Sydney, Australia (https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...).

Looks like another book on the list is not eligible. According to the Mock Caldecott group, Picture a Tree is illustrated by Barbara Reid, who is a Canadian, and therefore ineligible.

Found another ineligible book on the list. Lion vs. Rabbit was written and illustrated by Alex Latimer, who according to his Goodreads profile was born and lives in South Africa:

Sophie's Squash also isn't eligible. Anne Wilsdorf lives in Switzerland. But her illustrations are awesome.

Good catch. I checked the author and saw she was from Wisconsin, then never bothered to check the Illustrator.

Found another invalid book on the list, which is sad, because I loved this book as well. The Bear's Song by Benjamin Chaud is ineligible for several reasons. First of all, the illustrator is French, and is not eligible since he is not a U.S. resident. Even more of a problem is that the book was originally published in French in 2011, which makes two more strikes against it. That being said, it is a wonderful book, and I highly recommend it to everyone.

Ed, can you not remove the ineligible books from the list? Perhaps create a different list: "Books We Wish Could Win a Caldecott but which are Ineligible."

I wish I could. I started the list but don't have any way to remove the ineligible books. I think that takes someone with more privileges than I have. Usually, when they are pointed out as ineligible, people remove them from their list.

I have Librarian status in Goodreads, and after fiddling around a bit, I figured out how to remove ineligible books from the list. I removed Picture a Tree, Lion vs Rabbit, Sophie's Squash, and Bear's Song. Maybe someone would like to put them on a different list, maybe best illustrated books by foreign illustrators, or something like that.

Thank you Beverly. It is nice to have the list cleaned up a bit. There are a lot of good books this year that are not eligible. I created a list (https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/4...) to honor them anyway. I'm sure there are many other books that can make that list as well.

Not a bad year for the list. The Caldecott Medal winner and all three honor books finished in the top 10 for voting. Locomotive(Caldecott Award) finished in 7th, Journey finished 1st, Flora and the Flamingo finished 4th, and Mr. Wuffles! finished 10th. Pretty good voting, so thanks for everyone who participated. Like many, I am disappointed my personal favorites missed out, but I loved all the books the committee chose (as usual).
