its historical fantasy because the part about the finishing school and social life is more or less true
you know, i think the girl on the cover of "number the stars" looks like Dakota fanning. just a thought
Nora wrote: "Isn't A Great and Terrible Beauty more of a fantasy than historical fiction?"Yes, A Great and Terrible Beauty is very much historical fantasy.
Nora wrote: "Isn't A Great and Terrible Beauty more of a fantasy than historical fiction?"It takes place in the Victorian Era and showes alot about the life back then; it's Historical Fantas.
Nora wrote: "Isn't A Great and Terrible Beauty more of a fantasy than historical fiction?"yeah that it what i thought when i saw it on this list!!
I have t admit that I was really surprised when I saw Revolution as far down as it was. I just read that book last week and I loved it!!
Awesome list! Stop me before I add all of these to my "want to read" shelf. :P
Is alternate history welcome on this list?
Is alternate history welcome on this list?
Janis wrote: "Stephanie wrote: "Why is the Diary of Anne Frank on here?? It is by no means fiction..."My thoughts exactly! GREAT book, definitely historical, but not fiction."
There are several books on this list that are not historical fiction! Historical fiction is fiction set in a time 50+ years earlier than the time of the author's writing. Little Women and Pride & Prejudice don't fall into this category!!

Alternate history is generally science fiction not historical fiction.
Can Anne of Green Gables be considered historical fiction if it was written in the time period it takes place in?
Samantha wrote: "Can Anne of Green Gables be considered historical fiction if it was written in the time period it takes place in?"I would think so. At least we know it's historically accurate.
Hi. I recently started a historical fiction group called Young Adult Historical Fiction that discusses many of the books on this list. If you love Teen Historical fiction and discussing books, then I would really appreciate it if you joined.
Samantha wrote: "Can Anne of Green Gables be considered historical fiction if it was written in the time period it takes place in?"I think that's just fiction. Historical fiction is usually written about a different time period, not the one the writer is living in.
My inner librarian is coming out. Jane Austen isn't historical fiction since it was contemporary at the time it was written. Some of these books seem more like fiction set in a different era. Historical fiction is typically fiction set in the past, which builds on historical events or persons.
The Diary of a Young Girl is NOT fiction!! I am removing it from the list, along with several fiction books that were contemporary at the time of writing (such as Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott, Lucy Montgomery).
Hi guys, if you would like to talk about Historical Fiction with like minded people, come and join us here http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/1...
So, I agree that Anne Frank's Diary is NOT fiction, however, it has been observed/sorta proved that it was not your average diary; we revised it and tried to prepare it for publishing while in hiding. And even though it's not fiction, I am still really surprised to see it down so far on the list. Maybe not as people voted for it because it's nonfiction?Either way, great list! I found a lot of my favorite books on this list, as well as books that I haven't yet read but want to read.
Oh, and, hi, Jackie! Yes, everyone do feel free to join us at the group link Jackie provided, but do know that we discuss some books other than historical fiction, too. ;-)
Hey, I noticed that a lot of books on this list were by Ann Rinaldi. I moderate a group, Ann Rinaldi Fan Club, and I would love it if someone would come and join us! You can get there using the link I provided in this comment.
Hi,please look at my YA historical fiction book called "Revenge of a Tudor Teen" on Wattpad. As readers in the know I'd value your feedback...

Erica wrote: "A Great and Terrible Beauty is not historical fiction, it is fantasy"It is both; it has a Victorian touch and tells about the life style in a way or another.
If this is for teens shouldn't it be somewhat clean - no sex? Memoirs of a Geisha?? Philippa Gregory???
Number the Stars isn't teen by any stretch of imagination - it's meant for an audience younger than teenagers, and the protagonist is ten.
Also, The Outsiders was written to take place in the present day. Just because it was written a long time ago doesn't make it historical fiction.
Half of these aren't even teen books. I realize teens can read anything, but the list is specifically "Teen Hist-fic". And some of them are stretching it for being in that genre too. I mean, "Much Ado About Nothing"? come on, y'all...
Janet Flora wrote: "Half of these aren't even teen books. I realize teens can read anything, but the list is specifically "Teen Hist-fic". Samantha wrote: "Can Anne of Green Gables be considered historical fiction if it was written in the time period it takes place in?"I don't think so. It's only historical fiction if that's what it was originally published as.
To Kill a Mockingbird (#6) is not historical fiction, to name one. Just because a book is 'old' doesn't make it per definition historical fiction (see also an earlier comment by Kristin). And where are the 'teens as a main character', like the description says, in Gone with the Wind (#18), The Help (#21) and The Scarlet Pimpernel (#47), to name just a few?
Sorry to have to say this, but this list is a mess...
Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake (Love By Numbers, #1) by Sarah MacLean is not for kids. It is a historical romance for adults.
Taryn wrote: "Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake (Love By Numbers, #1) by Sarah MacLean is not for kids. It is a historical romance for adults."Agreed.
Seems to me that the description ("Historical fiction that features teens as the main characters") isn't read by many ... Or maybe it is ignored ... Not nice 😠
