Sorry. I haven't read anything by this author. I did see the movie 'Iris' though. Does that count?

Yes, :that::squalor: amazing.
The one where the young girl comes to paint a portrait? Title? Title? Lightbulb . . . The Sandcastle.
Oh, it's been too long since I read Iris Murdoch, I think she was brilliant. I've added some extra titles even though I haven't read them because they're in 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die.
Wanda wrote: "The one where the young girl comes to paint a portrait? Title? Title? Lightbulb . . . The Sandcastle."haven't read that one. Onto TBR it goes.

It's interesting that Murdoch regularly featured on the Booker shortlist but since her death is in serious danger of being forgotten. Even the bigger bookshops increasing fail to stock her work in any depth, or so it seems to me. I suppose once you're dead and your publisher has strip-mined your old papers one's brand worth diminishes somewhat and perhaps the philosophical nature of her writing is a tad unfashionable these days... Such a shame

I see that there are volumes that need combining.

This list doesn't make much sense to me, primarily because A Fairly Honourable Defeat isn't on it--not only should it be here, but it should be #1. To my mind, A Fairly Honourable Defeat isn't just her best book (it's worlds better than A Severed Head), but it's one of the best books of the 20th century.
