Cami I have never ead this book.

message 2: by Ruth (new)

Ruth I haven't even heard of these books before...

message 3: by Karena (new)

Karena wat is this?

message 4: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra Hard list for me. My parents weren't too restrictive in my reading, and most of what they would have disapproved of didn't interest me anyway. But, I did come up with a couple :)

The Kawaii Slartibartfast My mother was never restrictive. Teachers, on the hand...

message 6: by haania (new)

haania Forever... was a book I had to hide from my parents!

message 7: by Isabel (new)

Isabel I was 10 when Tear My Life Up (Arráncame la Vida) came out. Since the author is my aunt I was dying to read the book, which of course I was told by my parents I shouldn't. So I sneaked to read the first chapter. I honestly didn't get much, and was caught. So my mom took me to see Ángeles. She told me to wait until I was 15 or 16. I decided to read the book when I was 17. When I finished it, I had to agree with my parents and the author, 10 was not the right age to read it. At least not in México in 1985.

message 8: by Daria (new)

Daria I had to sneak under the cover of night to read Annie on my Mind (my parents are extremely homophobic).

message 9: by Madi (new)

Madi My parents never restricted my reading, it was mainly what school wouldn't let me read.

message 10: by Danna (new)

Danna Flowers in the attic was very good! I can't believe my mom let me read it, after she read it in her teens. She bought me this book not because I have asked her to, but on her own. It was surprising. She really wanted me to read it and I can't stop wondering why and how. I am currently reading the second book, and can't stop thinking: mom! what the hell??

message 11: by Carolyn F. (last edited Nov 05, 2011 11:58AM) (new)

Carolyn F. My mother was not restrictive at all EXCEPT I bought at 15 Steal This Book by Abbie Hoffman at the Goodwill, which shows you how to roll a joint, hitch hike, shop lift. In fact, I used it for shop lifting for quite awhile before I got caught. When my mother opened up the book, she threw it away with me yelling at her that she had no right. This was a counter-culture book written during the hippy days.

message 12: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Another book I was way too young to read was The Happy Hooker by Xaviera Hollander , I read it at about 14 or 15. This woman jacks off a dog while laying at the pool, has mile high sex, etc., and I have no sexual experience at all. Way too much information. I don't think my mother saw me reading this one or she would have thrown it away too.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

The Happy Hooker is on here twice.

message 14: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. For good reason! LOL :)

LOL! too funny!

Aure #SlavaUkrain Well.. It's good that I haven't added these books to my TBR list then :))

message 17: by Danna (new)

Danna Oh, no, some of them are really good! Take Flowers in the Attic for example, it's great!

message 18: by Jacob (new)

Jacob What's wrong with Catcher in the Rye? And House of Leaves?

message 19: by Wendy (last edited Jul 16, 2014 03:06PM) (new)

Wendy Great list! Oh the memories. My mother had me reading all sorts of stuff that got me a talking to by teachers. In seventh grade I brought The Clan of the Cave Bear to school and my teacher exclaimed, "Does your mother know you're reading that?!" Umm...she's the one who recommended it to me! I was a bit more sneaky around teachers after that, until I hit high school and everyone suddenly stopped worrying about me catching some sort of bookish-related perversion from the printed page.

message 20: by BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) (last edited Apr 07, 2015 02:33PM) (new)

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) Although I know several of the books on this list, most of those I read as an adult, so they don't really count. But there are three I read in my mid-teens, when I undoubtedly was not supposed to :-)

I noticed a copy of Pobby and Dingan (#127) as well. The Dutch edition was given to me a short while ago, and although I haven't read it yet, from its description I can't for the life of me see why this should be a book one isn't supposed to read, no matter what age.

A Dutch edition of the book was given to me several years ago, by someone who was cleaning out her shelves. Sounds like I should really start reading it sometime soon... :-)

message 23: by Terelyn (new)

Terelyn Marks There were only two books I was ever explicitly forbidden to read. The Godfather and The Exorcist. Of course, I went straight to the library and got them both!

Enjoyed The Godfather. The Exorcist scared the bejeepers out of me!

message 24: by Terelyn (new)

Terelyn Marks I'm surprised by some of the books on this list! They were required reading when I was in school!

message 25: by ~☆~Autumn (new)

My mother also let me read anything I wanted.

I was also required to read Lady Chatterly's Lover when I was in high school. I was about 16 and I was deeply offended. I did not read it. What was wrong with that teacher?
