message 1: by Laura (new)

Laura Tara, I just added a few more books, I hope you don't mind.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads How can one be looking forward to The Book of Negroes/Someone Knows My Name when it has been out for about three years?

message 3: by Misfit (new)

Misfit I've seen some book on lists that really have me scratching my head at times. Like Twilight on the Hunks in History. Why?

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, because Edward Cullen was born in 1903 so he's TECHNICALLY from a historical era, even though he's been going to different high schools for 90 years.

Twilight's like the clap. It turns up everywhere and you can't get rid of it.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I think someone made a "books that get on all the lists whether they qualify or not" list. Twilight was winning when I last saw it.

message 6: by Tara (new)

Tara Chevrestt I notice some 2010 books were put on here too. LOL Oh well. :) Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I haven't been able to access listopia for a while so I'm just responding now. For some reason, listopia takes so long to load, my computer crashes.

message 7: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Dec 11, 2010 02:36PM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads If "The Tudor Secret" was first published in 2004, how is it on this list?

You want a librarian to clean it up, Tara?

message 8: by Misfit (new)

Misfit Susanna wrote: "If "The Tudor Secret" was first published in 2004, how is it on this list?

I think the Tudor Secret is a new edition coming out in 2011 with new cover, etc.

At least I don't see Twilight on this one. That's a first :p

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Shocking, that.

message 10: by Misfit (new)

Misfit Susanna wrote: "Shocking, that."

Hope it doesn't give anyone any ideas...

I don't want to anger the people that have placed them there.. I do wish people paid closer attention to the release dates though. I don't consider something coming out in paperback a 2011 release if the hardback came out in 2010.

message 12: by Misfit (new)

Misfit You'll never win in the end. I am still trying to figure out how Twilight showed up on my hunks in history list :/

message 13: by Tara (new)

Tara Chevrestt I'm so sick of vampire and zombie books left and right. Really. It's way old by now.

Erin (Historical Fiction Reader) Misfit wrote: "You'll never win in the end. I am still trying to figure out how Twilight showed up on my hunks in history list :/"

I can explain part of it though personally I'm on your side of the debate. The character was born in 1901. It may be a little bit of a stretch but he technically fits the category.

Thanks for that.

message 16: by Amy (new)

Amy The selected books are of interest to be read within reading during this year if time permits.

message 17: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Very interesting thread girls, gives me lots of ideas for books to read and something entirely new.Every time i see a vampire book i want to throw up!!So most of these books haven't been released yet?

message 18: by Kristin (new)

Kristin Nice list! Definitely bookmarking for later reference.

message 19: by Keith (new)

Keith Kelly Emmm...maybe I'm gonna get stick for this...but should this list not be called "Historical Fiction for women 2011"? Its very feminine isn't it?

message 20: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Hartzler I discovered historical fiction in 2010 and I'm excited to have so many people who also love the genre. I refuse to read Twilight, anything that describes the main character as 'shimery' has lost all appeal.

message 21: by Danna (new)

Danna GREAT LIST!!!!! Probably one of The best!
Hey, have you noticed most of historical-fiction writers are women?? Cool (;

message 22: by Danna (new)

Danna Keith wrote: "Emmm...maybe I'm gonna get stick for this...but should this list not be called "Historical Fiction for women 2011"? Its very feminine isn't it?"
Yeah, you're totally right. But, so what?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Snow Flower and the Secret Fan came out in 2005; so what is it doing on this list?

message 24: by Caroline (new)

Caroline This new reader appreciates the list and the effort, I don't care when the book was published. It gives new readers lots of suggestions and places to start. ....I am so in love with Diana gabaldons books though....can't wait for the next one......

message 25: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Huston Susanna wrote: "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan came out in 2005; so what is it doing on this list?"

It does seem very odd, and it shouldn't be there. It isn't as though a new edition is coming or that the book went out of print.

message 26: by Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) (last edited May 01, 2011 02:32PM) (new)

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) "Susanna wrote: "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan came out in 2005; so what is it doing on this list?"

Rebecca wrote: "It does seem very odd, and it shouldn't be there. It isn't as though a new edition is coming or that the book went out of print."

I agree. There are plenty of other lists (including for historical fiction as such, not historical fiction specifically released in 2011) where this book rightly belongs -- and usually can already be found. There should be SOME adherence to list criteria at least, else why have them at all?

ETA: Ditto Allende's "Island Beneath the Sea" and Moran's "Cleopatra's Daughter" (both published in 2009).

message 27: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Apple I LOVE Historical Fiction... Thanks for the list!

message 28: by Ellie (new)

Ellie Thank you for this list! (:

message 29: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Great list -- thank you for all the effort that you took to compose it!! I have read a few of the suggestions that were put forward here and I am thrilled. Cheers!

message 30: by Teralyn (new)

Teralyn Pilgrim Beautiful covers, but where are all these womens' heads?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads It's a real publishing trend - see the "Dude Where's My Head" list here on Listopia.

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) There are even two lists on this already -- in addition to "Dude Where's my Forehead," there is also Lobstergirl's "Headless Women" ... and right it is, too, that the phenomenon is getting that much attention!

message 33: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Cleopatra's Daughter was first released in 2009. Not sure if this was brought up yet?

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Hannah wrote: "Cleopatra's Daughter was first released in 2009. Not sure if this was brought up yet?"

Yep -- see post #26. Deleted both (again, if memory serves ...)
