After reading two books in a row that have no female characters, I think there should be a "list of shame" for books that are otherwise good, but ignore half of humanity (no excuses about historical accuracy, this isn't nonfiction). By "genre" I mean science fiction, fantasy, or horror (and their various derivatives). By character I mean a named female who has meaningful interactions and is more than a cardboard cutout. Let's be loose with that definition in order to keep it in the spirit of the list. If the female wasn't more than a grocery list of traits, a title (i.e. wife/mistress), and a name, she probably isn't a character.
The books don't need to be bad (in fact they can be, in general, good books), just sausagefests.

One book that has always stood out in my mind because it only has one female character in the whole book but is still a wonderful story is "Treasure Island." The only woman is Jim Hawkin's mother, all the other characters are men, the sailors, the pirates, etc.
