This list is for young adult and middle grade (historical) fiction that prominently features Native American/First Nations characters.

Note: If you're using this list to find books for children, I'd encourage you to look up the authors and books and see if the information contained in a particular work is outdated or inaccurate. Some of these books are more accurate and sensitive than others.

MOHAMED Wolf Brother should be removed, it doesn't contain native americans, rather it's set in prehistoric Scandinavia...

message 2: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl So many here that are racist, like Indian in the Cupboard, the Little House books and Peter Pan. Choose "Own Voices" and also check here: https://americanindiansinchildrenslit....

message 3: by MOHAMED (new)

MOHAMED And what the heck is Twilight doing here?

message 4: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart Holly, there are an awful lot of picture books on this list. I know you specified YA and middle grade. Did you want the picture books deleted?

Yes please! I can go through it later too. Thanks Rainbowheart.

message 6: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Just be careful, because some picture books *are* for older children. Saltypie: A Choctaw Journey from Darkness into Light is shaped like a picture book, and has pictures on every page, but still it is a middle grade book.

message 7: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl otoh, Mama, Do You Love Me? is a beautiful book, but I had to remove it from this list as it's for preschool children.

Indian in the Cupboard, racist? Don't be ridiculous. And neither is Little House on the Prairie.

message 10: by Rosa (last edited Mar 06, 2019 10:22PM) (new)

Rosa You’re right, that was unwise of me.

message 11: by Rosa (new)

Rosa Okay, Little House on the Prairie may be problematic, but it has empathy for the Native Americans.

message 12: by Rosa (new)

Rosa And The Indian in the Cupboard is all about Omri learning the truth behind stereotypes of Native Americans.

message 13: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Thank you.
I disagree, but I see your points.

message 14: by Rosa (last edited Mar 07, 2019 01:33PM) (new)

Rosa It was unwise of me to feed the troll, I meant. Thanks for your graciousness, which shows that you may not be a troll at all.

message 15: by Mela (new)

Mela this list is obsolete.

message 16: by Rosa (new)

Rosa Why do you say that, Mela?

But what about the way the Native figurine speaks?! HUH?! Call me crazy, but that's racist to me.

message 18: by Cheryl (last edited Apr 06, 2020 05:51PM) (new)

Cheryl You're not crazy.

A better source for these books though is Debbie Reese, either her newsletter or her GR bookshelves.

Rosa AstroTomato19 wrote: "But what about the way the Native figurine speaks?! HUH?! Call me crazy, but that's racist to me."

It sounds like it's from an old Western movie, yes, but I wouldn't call it racist. How do you think 1760's Native Americans' English sounded?

AstroTomato19 Rosa wrote: "It sounds like it's from an old Western movie, yes, but I wouldn't call it racist. How do you think 1760's Native Americans' English sounded?"

I sure don't know, but I see your point (and I sure do accept it). Still, the book didn't specify when he was from anyway.

message 22: by Rosa (new)

Rosa The book just says "sometime in the 1700s," but since his Iroquois tribe and the British were fighting the French and Algonquins, that means he was from the time of the French and Indian War, 1754-1763 (the Seven Years' War in Europe). In the movie, he's from 1761.
