Very often I find M/M books are just heteronormative romance with an extra dick. Having grown up reading slash fanfiction, I find that quite a disappointment*. I feel there's so much to be done through the lens of queerness instead of gayness, so much to be said not just about homosexual relationships but heterosexual ones and even about all relationships and the imbalances of power that fuck them up and make them work and what is the difference between the two, or between the real imbalances and the ones we fantasize about.

This list is not intended for romance centric books, which is another feature of more realistic m/m fiction, the guys have lives that don't revolve around the other guy, but by the nature of the queerness I'm referring to, most of them have an important relationship subplot.


* I don't have a moral objection to 'classical' romance, to each their own, but I like my love stories with a dose of social awareness.
