I'm talking about the good stuff. Published YA paranormal romances which are well written, contain actual plots, have likable, intelligent protagonists who don't stoop to using their sexuality as a weapon. Also? Non-abusive, age appropriate (immortals being the exception here for obvious reasons), non-stalkery heroes. Basically any well written YA Paranormal Romance that doesn't make you wanna gag and/or punch someone in the face (*coughFALLENcough*).

Penny, your list has been destroyed. There is nothing quality about half of these books. Oh well, we tried...
Tatiana wrote: "Penny, your list has been destroyed. There is nothing quality about half of these books. Oh well, we tried..."Ha, Shiver is listed twice too.
The Host isn't YA lit. It's adult. Even the author bills it as sci fi for those who don't like sci fi
If you click on the votes, you can see who voted for them. If there's more than one person though, there's no way to tell who added it first. Plus, you can always just edit the list if people keep adding stupid stuff.
I can edit the list? How? This is the first list I've ever created so I don't know how this all works. I feel like my list has been violated. :(
Ah, ok. Just go to the top, at the end of your description:(*coughFALLENcough*). (edit) <-click edit
On the next page, you'll see these links:
check for duplicates
remove particular books <-click this
Then delete away!
And also, you don't have to be the creator to delete books, any librarian can, but if someone comes and deletes books off a list for no reason goodreads will go as far as deleting the member's account.
Okay, so I did delete Hush, Hush for obvious reasons. The Mortal Instruments series is still up though (because even though I don't care for the series it isn't controversial in the same sense that Hush, Hush is controversial. Although the non-incest "incest" freaks me the crap out, especially when Jace starts to get off on it at one point during the third book), as much as it pains me to see them there, so far up on the list. Also, I got rid of the duplicates.
As for the rest of the books, either I have not read them or don't have justifiable reasons to delete them. If any of you girls have read any of the books on the list and feel they clearly don't belong, go ahead and delete.
Penny! How can you not want to delete VA? Two words: statutory rape. oh or alternatively cradle snatching. eew! oh oh oh, or gold-digging narcissist.
I guess quality is a subjective term these days. To be fair I am incredibly jaded when it comes to paranormal YA these days. I blame many things, everything but myself.
I'd like to point out that the book Betrayal by Mayandree Michel is both self-published and not actually out yet. The former may not bother any of you, but the latter makes it kind of hard for anyone else to judge if it actually belongs on the list.
As Vinaya has pointed out the Vampire Academy series has cradle snatching. All those in favor of deleting?(I am, but I feel I need a little more support here.)
I went ahead and edited the description of this list by adding Age Appropriate Heroes. But I just realized VA already breaks the whole "protagonist that doesn't use her sexuality as a weapon" thing.
I can't judge VA properly since I haven't read the series but student/teacher relationships being portrayed as true love is a big no-no in my book.
Stephanie Meyer & Cassandra Clare ~ they are the poison ivy of YA! No matter how many times you weed them out, they come back stronger than ever.
Well, crap. Fire and Hemlock is an amazing book, but the guy is way older. So that one probably needs to go if we're focusing on age-appropriateness!
Kelly wrote: "Well, crap. Fire and Hemlock is an amazing book, but the guy is way older. So that one probably needs to go if we're focusing on age-appropriateness!"How much older? Is he an immortal of some sort or just a regular (human) older guy?
Regular human older guy. (But if we're ruling out all immortals, too, then scratch The Iron King. I really did like it a lot, but IIRC, practically everyone is ancient except the heroine.)
Okay, I went ahead and deleted The Host as it is Adult Sci-Fi so in no way belongs on this list. I also got rid of the VA series because of the mentor-student sexual relationship, sexuality being used as a weapon, statutory rape, and then later on what could be considered full-on rape (with the use of a narcotic-like substance. Vampire venom) and so forth. The Guardian was also deleted as it isn't yet available to the public. I don't mind if this book is added again AFTER April 2011 so long as it fits the criteria listed above. Don't get me wrong, I want to delete the mortal instruments series. But unless I can think of a justifiable reason to delete the series I'm going to go ahead and leave it up there. If any of you can think of a reason let me know.
I think there needs to be a definition of quality paranormal YA. I know it's sort of a subjective thing to discuss since we all have different ideas of what makes a romance good or bad.
I don't think we all will ever agree what is a good PNR and what is not. Some of us can detest MI, but there is a ton of people who think it's fab. Same goes for Shiver and such.
I think the pseudo-incest is enough reason to throw out MI. Other books are being left off due to innapropriate sexual expression ~ and correct me if I'm wrong because I never made it halfway through the first book, let alone the rest of the MI series, but this isn't a series that explores incest (gross as that is) or addresses it as an actual "issue" right? Just a creepy forbidden attraction that is beyond wrong, but written to make Jace out to be sexy. Hmmm... maybe it's a fine line I'm drawing here...
Hush, Hush is on the list. Again. Bwahahahaha! I think I'm going a little bit mad. Clearly there is a large group of people who think there isn't anything truly abusive about Patch's behavior--if the abuser/would-be murderer ends up being the protagonist's twuuu wuv then everything he did before is canceled out, I'm guessing--which just further enforces my belief that teenagers are influenced by the media.
Thanks Stephenie Meyer. Your series brought about this nightmarish trend--abusive, controlling behavior = #1 trait girls want to see in boys they date. I hope you're happy. (read: I hope you choke.)
I have to say, some of the comments here are kind of ridiculous. Everyone is going to have a different opinion on what is good and what isn't. Personally I didn't find anything wrong with Hush, Hush or Twilight. Although with Twilight I can understand why others didn't take to it.
Shiver is amazing.
Shiver is amazing.
Shiver was never removed from the list neither was the Mortal Instruments series, and it's easy to argue whether or not they are quality YA PNR. The reason they weren't removed is because there isn't a controlling manipulative, creepy, and/or abusive boyfriend in either. Another thing is the girls don't use their magical slut powers to manipulate the men around them. You can't say that about Hush, Hush or Twilight.
Okay, I have to admit, Vampire Academy was slightly enjoyable. SLIGHTLY! But it was in no way, NO WAY, well written. It had cursing in every single paragraph!!!!! Don't get me wrong, I understand a little cursing here and then, I curse myself, but that just means that the author can't think of better words to describe her 'vision'.
