Thanks Karla. I've fixed the duplicates. I've also removed Age of Myth by Michael J. Sullivan which is not yet published and does not appear to be a likely contender for TOB based on its description.
Maybe there should be a link to the group. I had a hard time understanding what this was for when I first came across this...Also: does the outcome of this list determine the alt. ToB from the group? I am still wondering about that one...
Hi Jasmine. This list has nothing to do with alt.tob--it's just a place to vote for next year's possible Tournament of Books. Now and then I edit out the books that probably won't qualify for the 2017 tournament. I really welcome the help with this. Also eligibility is a judgment call...last year some books were included that were not published in 2015 (notably Oreo), and also, the TOB staff have mentioned the possibility that they might reach back into the previous year if a book seemed overlooked because of being published late in the year. poingu
is back. New ineligible additions :
I'm only listing the obvious ones that stand out to me. Not deliberately checking ones that are low and known to me as 2016 published. Likely they'll never get anywhere close to the first page.
ETA: Intimations: Stories
has 0 ratings and reviews but is currently at #71 with 2 votes. IMO, delete for being a planted book. -------
Happy to be of help ;)

Thanks Megalion. Man, this is frustrating! At least I got off the Nate the Great and other easy readers. It took about 2 hours to get everything off yesterday.
But I'm keeping literary fiction from Q4 2015 because of TOB's vague deadline and their acknowledgment of how they frequently overlook Q4 titles and may consider them the next year--so Laurus stays.
Why delete Intimations: Stories? There are several other forthcoming titles, and that one is by an author many of us were surprised to see not on last year's TOB. Is excitement/anticipation not a factor for people?
Sduff222 wrote: "Why delete Intimations: Stories? There are several other forthcoming titles, and that one is by an author many of us were surprised to see not on last year's TOB. Megalion wrote: "Oops, I'm an ARC reader, didn't think about that. I'll check what I added now."Please don't worry about it too much! Because on the other hand waiting until publication means that books published in January will have a boost in our list's rankings. If Intimations: Stories appears on the list prematurely again I probably will leave it right there...it's just that you had given me feedback about it that I acted on.
OK cool because while it's already published i think, was hoping that getting The Huntingfield Paintress on the list and high as possible (via legit votes from fellow arc readers I got to read the book) in hopes of attracting some TBR attention.
Its a small indie press book that IMO is easy contender for making the best of 2016 lists. Historical fiction about a real woman who was very progressive minded for her time (not activist about it) who followed Michelangelo's path by painting the ceiling of her small church.
Hehe, i can never not rave about it if I mention it. But hey, I'll do what I can to get any word of mouth going.
Haven't actually checked yet but pretty sure that all my additions have or will be published by sept.
Oh I called out Imitation Stories because it had ZERO ratings or reviews. Which made it likely a plant and not a legit vote from a neutral reader. As I said above but Sduff222 missed it.
Cheers
Currently on first page
published June 2015
published Oct 2015
published Dec 2015, but first published in Jan 2015??
published Sept 2015
The Year of the Runaways was published in the United States in March 2016.Spill Simmer Falter Wither was also published in the United States in March 2016.

No, I just think it's kinda weird to say things like "plant." I am very sure that tons of people are voting for books they haven't finished yet. I mean, I got a copy of Intimations: Stories, so egalleys are out there. I just typically don't rate a lot of books on goodreads. And considering Intimations only had a couple votes, I think it's likely that people were voting based on having read one or two stories elsewhere.
And
is back again. I'm voting
onto list. Out in a couple months and absolutely wonderful! Check it out poingu. :)
I removed The Nightingale as it was published in Feb 2015 and so does not meet the guidelines for this list.I've also deleted A Man Called Ove as it was published in 2014
i removed the following nonfiction books:* Adulthood Is a Myth: A "Sarah's Scribbles" Collection
* Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology
* Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania
* Ghettoside: A True Story of Murder in America
* Everybody Was So Young: Gerald and Sara Murphy: A Lost Generation Love Story (which was actually on the list twice, but one was a mistitled edition)
* Pandemic: Tracking Contagions, from Cholera to Ebola and Beyond
* Teacher Misery: Helicopter Parents, Special Snowflakes and Other Bullshit
* The Tao of Bill Murray: Real-Life Stories of Joy, Enlightenment, and Party Crashing
this work of fiction was duplicated on the list, so it was merged into one record: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet
edited to add:
Megalion wrote: "I'm voting The Tao of Bill Murray: Real-Life Stories of Joy, Enlightenment, and Party Crashing onto list...."
@ megalion: i am SO sorry! i just now saw your comment on the bill murray book. because it was catalogued as nonficiton/ is essays and this list is for novels and short stories (as is the tournament of books), i jumped the gun before realizing you had commented specifically on this book. there was only the one vote, so if you want to re-add it, no other votes were lost. my apologies to you!
22 aug 16 -- removed: Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging, by Sebastian Junger -- non fiction work. it had 1 vote and was in position #203.
12 sept 16 -- removed Circling the Sun, by paula mclain, as it was published 28 july 2015. it had 3 votes, and was in position 115.
removed
again. It was published in Feb 2015, for the love of all that is bookwormy can people please stop adding it?!
Lisa wrote: "I removed The Nightingale as it was published in Feb 2015 and so does not meet the guidelines for this list.I've also deleted A Man Called Ove as it was published ..."
Lisa, there is massive "pushing" of some books onto any and every goodreads list, it seems. And I know absolutely that there are massive, pre-arranged voting segments to get votes: if you analyze the total votes for last year's best fiction: Go Set a Watchman, you'll see that the numbers indicate data so non-normal that statistically they are impossible.
As far as I can tell, The Gracekeepers and A General Theory of Oblivion are from early 2015.
Purity and You Too Can Have a Body Like Mine were published in 2015 and were on the TOB 2016 longlist so they definitely do not qualify.

Thanks Sarah. I deleted all except General Theory because the Archipelago/US edition came out in 2016. I'm not sure if that was the first in US, but I think so. Anyone know for sure?
I checked the book page and clicked on the "other lists with this title" before adding "It Ends With Us" which didn't show it being on this list so I added it then I saw as I scrolled more it was already added. Now it's a duplicate at number 352 at the time of this comment. Not sure why it didn't show in the lists it was on. Sorry for the duplicate.
Chanced upon this very interesting list. Sorry to mention this, since I gave both books five stars, but neither When Breath Becomes Air nor Lab Girl are fiction. :-( Too bad...
The system found and removed 1 duplicate. I removed When Breath Becomes Air, by Paul Kalanthi, from #26 because it is nonfiction:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Also gone from page 1, Me Before You, with a pub date of Sept. 2015:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Removed from #100, All the Light We Cannot See, pub date May 2014:

Lisa wrote: "I removed The Nightingale as it was published in Feb 2015 and so does not meet the guidelines for this list.I've also deleted A Man Called Ove as it was published ..."
...and tonight I am deleting it again. Why do people do this?? Backman published two titles last year, and this was not one of them!
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Seriously? This book was first published in 1962. Even if one is fooled by a re-release, that was 2006. We Have Always Lived in the Castle
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8...
And again...2002. The Art of Hearing Heartbeats, removed from page 2.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
Published 2009:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6...
If it's the date of first publication that counts, then the following books should definitely not be on this list (I own a copy, so I should know, shouldn't I...?):The Vegetarian (#7)
Brooklyn (#168)
Thus Bad Begins (#188)
The Luminaries (#252)
First They Killed My Father (#334)
As far as other titles are concerned, I only went through the first 50 on the list but I found
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (#49)
Please don't purge The Vegetarian--it's actually in this year's TOB.No need to have the list be totally pure, imo. TOB itself has championed translations, reprints, and USA-first-printings, even if these books might have been published years earlier. Another example being last year's Oreo.
The publication issue can be frustrating, because sometimes a book is first published in UK or USA, then released the following year in the other country, and so Goodreads members in the second country of publication don't get a chance to vote for a book they really like and couldn't have obtained when it was legit. But one does have to draw the line somewhere, or the whole list is pointless. For those experiencing this frustration, I recommend cruising the best of decade lists. That said, The Goldfinch was published in 2013, and I just pulled it off the third page. Seriously, folks.

And from page 4, for heaven's sake Upton Sinclair? Best of 2016? Oh come on now! https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...
And an early bird, We Were the Lucky Ones, pub. 2017, page 4:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
Also page 4, The Curious Case of Dassoukine's Trousers, first published 2012:

Reprobates, also early pub date

A gentle reminder: if you see a title that falls outside the list's description, i.e., the wrong pub date or nonfiction, please indicate on which page you found it. Those of us that help edit these lists are all unpaid, doing this for the satisfaction alone.
Also, if you have minimal qualifications such as a BA and/or experience in library science or education, consider volunteering to be a Goodreads librarian, and then you can swoop in and nip those annoying entries yourself (but always document what you have done, as I did here).
Deleted a few books that were published way outside of the time range such as Brooklyn, published in 2009 and Unbroken, published in 2010. I also removed multiple memoirs which are nonfiction.
Deleted from position #190, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, which was published in 2007. C'mon now, people. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6...
From #53, 2014, The Long Road to a Small Angry Planet
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
From #88, Sudden Death, 2013
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
The system found and removed 1 duplicate.
When users add new titles, it makes for a more interesting list and provides other readers with ideas for future reading. However, please do check the publication date. Sometimes a book is first published in some other English-language country, and so it shows up in your local bookstore as a hot-off the presses release. But for this list, you need the specific publication window mentioned above, and that means a novel that's been published for the first time in 2016 (or December 2015) ever, anywhere.
Greg wrote: "This list feels very old. I read a number of these books in early 2016."Look at the subtext. This is not a list of 2017 books; it's a list of books published between 12/15 and 12/16. The tournament is this year's; the books are last year's.
There are some things on there that seem to me to be not eligible. For example The Invisible Library, published in January 2015.

Lunora and the Monster King NEEDS to be on here. Brilliant read for 2017."
...but you didn't add it. Nobody else will do this; everyone that likes a book that isn't here adds their titles using the tab at the top of the list, and each of us adds the books we liked best.
The comment section is primarily to note errors and assist in editing of the list.
