The Diary of a Young Girl
by
"I became clinically depressed after reading this book; it was very traumatic at age 10 to begin to learn how evil humanity could be. My heart simply, and permanently, broke."

The Jungle
by
"Conditions in slaughterhouses are appalling, but who thinks about it when they are 16 years old? And adults don't either, unless they are OH&S professionals or animal rights advocates. As a teenager in the 1960s I had, until I read this book, trusted the adult world to be doing things right; I have never trusted any food manufacturer since! It also started me on the path to being a vegetarian, as one way I could protect myself."

Johnny Got His Gun
by
"Devastating book told from inside the mind of a completely disabled soldier who does not even know where he is hospitalised. This is an anti-war message, but it got me interested in neuroscience, and obsessed with the fate of people thought to be in a vegetative state. "

The Screwtape Letters
by
"There is so much wisdom in these letters from the senior demon to his young nephew whose assignment is to corrupt people. It reveals our shared human strengths and weaknesses, and makes one reflect on the make up of their character and worthiness of the life they are leading."

Seth Speaks
by
"Seth's 'channeled' explanation (through Jane Roberts)of human life in the overall scheme of things completely unhinged me for some years. I still have no idea what is true, and what is not; but then I think most of us are in the same boat whether we admit it or not! It was fascinating, anyway, but I try not to think about it."

The Twenty-One Balloons
by
"This wonderful children's book introduced my 5th grade class to the concept of a charming, appealing utopia which was destroyed when Krakatoa blew up."
