I don't usually get obsessed over publishers, but NYRB is worth it. See my review of Hadrian the Seventh for an example. And if you're looking for a good book to start with, try The Long Ships. I haven't found the words to properly review it yet, but it's a glorious book.
Thanks for opening my eyes! I am more enamored with each passing month by Farrar, Girroux & Straus slash Picador slash MacMillan for the quality of work that they associate with.
I know I own a few FG&S books, although I don't think I could point them out on the shelf. But I am starting to notice publishers more: first NYRB, then I stumbled across University of Nebraska Press, which publishes classic sci-fi under their "Bison Frontiers of the Imagination" imprint. Then a friend introduced me to Open Letter Books, which offers literature in translation. I've even started paying attention to Penguin Classics, after finding some interesting stuff in their catalogue. Feels a bit weird to think of a book in terms of publisher, rather than author and genre--but it's a great way to find new things to read.
I completely understand. I think it ever enhances the overall experience to start understanding more about the origin of the books beyond the author alone.
NYRB and Open Letter are both great. I'm also fond of Archipalego and Dalkey Archive. New Directions also publishes a lot of good stuff.
