Nevermind. The author was already aware of the irony there. ;)EDIT: connotations. It's a bit chaotic in our place today. :S
Rainbowheart - do you know of any "hazing" lists? (The awful things older students do to new ones)? I couldn't find one, but surely there's one already? Maybe I don't know the right search term. :SBrown Cow, for example (the Brits don't call it 'hazing' - I think that's an American term?!)
Also - your guess for Sam's book sounds quite promising! :) I find this subject is a fun one to search for.
Haha, I am a bit addicted myself!I couldn't find any hazing lists. There are some for regular bullying, although hazing is different. Not sure about the British term for it. Boy: Tales of Childhood goes into something called "fagging" which is basically younger boys made to act as servants for older boys, but I'm not sure that's exactly the same either.
That's a very unfortunate term... but now I've started to wonder if that's where the fag =gay male slang originated (because it was just a cigarette, once. And you could be 'fagged out' as in burnt out. And the fag-end of something is the "butt-end", I guess we'd say in Canada, though that's still refering to cigarettes. Now I'm all curious about the etymology on butts and fags re: cigarettes!).Crap. I'm not sure I WANT to make a list for it, because hazing's not really a subject I care to intentionally read about (though that hasn't stopped me before).
If you want it, go for it! Otherwise, could I ask you to keep a lookout for other books on that theme? If there's enough out there, might be worth sinking a well... :)
It's been such a long time since I read Boy, but I'm sure the terminology was connected to that in some way. I remember being surprised by the term when I read it as a kid because the American connotation is obviously so different.I'll keep an eye out for hazing books. I can't think of any off the top of my head, but I'll post if I come across some!
