Haven't read any of the choices listed but two favourites that come to mind are Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows and Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories.

Ahhh I love the ones I've read, it's too difficult to choose so I won't vote.
Thanks for mentioning Watership Down! Seems to be another great book I did't know existed.
It had to be Watership Down for me though Bambi is really good too.
Best in what way? I'd choose the one in which the animals act according to their nature most closely, *and* is the most rewarding for rereads as the reader matures and sees more details, perspectives, and literary value, *and* is engrossing, *and* .... what other criteria??
