Becca They all sound ever so splendid, however my WW2 interest got the best of me.

A suggestion to fellow voters, perhaps? 'Guns, Germs, and Steel,' while a fantastic book always worth a read or two, is also a bit thick. While that does not bother myself, I know some people might find this month a wee bit busy for a book of such length. Just a heads up, :)

Becca Not a problem. Actually, allow me to PM you with a suggestion of my own, if you don't mind, :)

Betty Bandy I am voting for Knight's Cross, but I would like to explain why. I also am a serious reader of wider scopes and wider issues, so my own second choice would be on Iraq. Many Americans were apparently somewhat distrustful of the official Iraq reports of previous years so perhaps this book could help us better examine that. The Spanish Civil War has a bit more distance and perspective to it, and is of interest as a lead-in to WW II, and for its early victim Garcia Lorca. I prefer biographies of certain people because it enables us to see more clearly how an individual handles whatever conditions he is thrust into, which may have more personal applicability to the reader. Rommel was a professional soldier and his case presents interesting aspects. My personal favorite military biographies include Lord Elton's Gordon of Khartoum, David Fisher's The War Magician about Maskelyne, Caleb Carr's Devil Soldier on Frederick Townsend War, and David Chandler's Napoleon's Marshals .
