Kim Most of these books are part way through series. I voted for The Lions of al-Rassan as although it's part of a larger world it's a stand-alone and the only one which sounded good from its synopsis.

Brad I thought only two were part way through series -- Two Towers and Farthest Shore -- but since we've already done the precursors I figured it would be okay. I think the Lackey one might be too, though. That was a boo boo. I switched the Lackey book so it's the first in the series.

message 3: by Kim (new)

Kim By part way through I just meant part of a larger world with characters from other books, etc. Not a bad thing just something that influenced my choice.

message 4: by Brad (last edited Oct 08, 2010 07:12PM) (new)

Brad I see. Well, I fixed the Lackey anyway, and I wouldn't have noticed without you, so thanks. (and your choice is a good one, Kim. I love that book.)

Brad Man this poll is tight, and with six days left I wouldn't bet on any book to win it.

Please, please, anything but Mists. I can't do another Arthur book

Mike (the Paladin) I understand. There was a time when it seemed to me every second book published in the fantasy realm was an "NEW TAKE!" on the Arthurian legend. There were books from Arthur's point of view, Mordred's point of view, Guinevere,s point of view, Lancelot's point of view...possibly Arthur's horse's point of view.

I'm backing off on some of the group reads I've been in on...I was doing several each month, so, if a book doesn't catch my interest now, I just back off for a month, and check back the month after. I found, you do every reading group out there... mostly. :) LOL

Hannah ⚔️ Jaedia I haven't managed an Arthur book yet.. admittedly they were 'Le Morte D'Arthur' which was a difficult one to attempt at 15, and 'The Once And Future King' which I literally couldn't get past the writing style.. So Mists is next on my list to attempt admittedly, when I get hold of a less dog-eared copy, and okay, my decision for the above may have been swayed by Ala a little bit (don't hurt me!) :p

Mike (the Paladin) Le Mort I like...I know it's sacrilege to some, but I never liked TO&FK or for that matter Sword in the Stone White had too many axes to grind...and though I know some will really disagree with me here the same is true for Mists of Avalon. Disliked it...

Good luck.

I just finished TOaFK for another group, and that was such a slog. I'd rather not have a go at another Arthur tale so soon(or ever, really).

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides And here I thought I was the only one who couldn't get into TO&FK. Admittedly I was only 16 or so when I tried to read it, but I have a theory that it was one of those books which came to me too late. If I'd been younger I might have liked it. (Or maybe now that I'm older and read a lot of YA and kids' books, I might like it now. Who knows.)

I read Mists once and thought it was interesting (at around the same time as TO&FK, actually), but I've never been able to bring myself to re-read it. It's just so ... dense/weighty.

JSWolf The problem with this poll is all the good ones I've already read.

Scribble Orca Happy to read Le Guin again. Just did JRRT's TT.

Kim The poll has already ended :)

Scribble Orca Ah well, Ursula wasn't going to make it with my lil' ol' vote :)

Yup, I've read that last one :-). And all the others, too. Here it is:
Anne McCaffery - Black Horses For the King Black Horses For the King by Anne McCaffrey .
The horses in England when Arthur wanted to be a knight were shaggy, slow ponies. He needed tall, fast horses, the tank of that time. He was able to import them from North Africa...

Oh and I loved Mists, several times and through many sequels and prequels. I got over the sequels & prequels eventually but do enjoy rereading Mists from time to time.

Mike (the Paladin) Didn't care for it...but then I'm not much of an M.Z. Bradley fan over all, can't agree on everything.

I love Arthurian legend so I guess that helps, but the writing style is a huge thing for my enjoyment of a book. TO&FK didn't really have that for me (a style, that is).

Mike (the Paladin) WWWaaaayyy back when, I sort of liked the Lawhead Arthurian books, but burned out even on them. Just got tired of it. It's a wonderful legend etc. but it's been done and redone to death (in my opinion).
