Richard Gerlach
Richard Gerlach asked Tom Deady:

Hi Tom, I just started reading Haven, and I'm in love with it so far. What are your main inspirations for this novel? I'm sensing a bit of It mixed with Stranger Things.

Tom Deady Hi Richard!

Haven was actually written in fits and starts over a very long period of time (~1996-2012). There were a lot of different sources of inspiration, but most heavily from IT as you mentioned (Stranger Things wasn't around yet). I got part of the idea for Paul from an old Mel Gibson movie called Man Without a Face - about a disfigured man assumed to be guilty of child molestation because of his looks. A lot of the "nostalgic" references (like "off the roof" and carnivals and the hobby shop) are stolen from my own childhood. I'm so glad you are enjoying the story. I think no matter what else I do in my writing career, Haven will always be my favorite child!
