Huge fan of White Oleander, have read it at least 5 times. I really like Starr, what a character. I know nothing compares to White Oleander but are there any novels that are similar in story line or genre that you could recommend? Or any good romantic stories that aren't cliche?

Hi Liesl!
I"m just seeing this letter, after all this time! Since White Oleander, I have written three other books--Paint It Black, in 2007, now a film made by Amber Tamblyn you can see on Netflix, The Revolution of Marina M. in 2017 and soon, Chimes of a Lost Cathedral, publishing on July 2, 2019. All are different but they have a decided family relationship. I like an intense story, sensual language, very dramatic, romantic, with strong and interesting women characters.
Hope you give them a try!
Other books I could recommend: The Lover by Marguerite Duras, Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson, The Quiet American by Graham Greene, Justine by Lawrence Durrell.

Hey Janet, I wanted to get your thoughts on writing groups. Do you feel these hinder or help a writer with their novel? I'm in a writing group now and though I think most of the writers are offering valid feedback sometimes I feel there are a couple not being genuinely sincere with their input. I just wanted to see if this is something I should keep investing my time in while working on my novel. Tks Shelly :)

I just read White Oleander and was moved by it as I haven't been moved by a work of fiction for a very long time. Who were some of your inspirations for the character of Ingrid? I'm a huge fan of Edna St. Vincent Millay and Ingrid reminded me of her in some ways: her magnetism, selfishness, etc. I also enjoyed your poetic style of writing! Have you published any poetry?
