Goodreads asked Amanda Earl:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Amanda Earl 1. Read everything. All the time. Read more than you write.
2. Workshop your writing. Don't rely on family for feedback; they will always say it's good.
3. Avoid vanity presses: these are the publishers who will charge you a fee to publish your work.
4. Once you've done some workshops and learned how to edit your work, submit it to various publications. Don't be disenchanted by rejection. It's not personal. Just takes time to find the right match.
5. Once you've built up some credentials, apply for grants or assistance to fund your work.
6. Eventually you can self-publish, but don't rush into it. see steps above.
7. Don't give up.
