Goodreads asked Kip Koelsch:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Kip Koelsch Read. Read books. Read newspapers. Read magazines. Read in the genre in which you are writing.

Keep a journal. A journal is the ideal place to take note of story, character and scene ideas; it's a place to run with ideas--sketching out a variety of paths. Remember, a journal is for "informal" writing--don't get hung up on punctuation, spelling, grammar or anything structural (unless that is what you are exploring). Focus on letting your ideas run free across the page.

Write to please yourself.
