How do you get inspired to write?

Rod Gillies Inspiration can come from anywhere - particularly other books! I read a lot of non-fiction; popular science and history mostly. That can prompt wonderful "what if..." thoughts. Most of them go nowhere, but sometimes a germ sticks in the mind and eventually grows into a plot or a character or even just a scene.
