I'm just returning to novel-writing (after a 20 year gap). It feels very much like starting from scratch: I'll need a new agent, new publisher... that stuff is daunting. But at the same time there's the sense of having spent the time getting to grips with what I want to write, and how I want to do it; so I think the hiatus was necessary.
