Guy Burt (he/him) is a novelist and BAFTA award-winning screenwriter.

Burt wrote his first novel, After the Hole, when he was 18. He went on to write two further novels, Sophie and The Dandelion Clock, and taught English for five years. When After the Hole was filmed (as The Hole, starring Thora Birch), Burt began writing for screen, and has become one of the top screenwriters working in Britain today. You can see his screenwriting credits here.

He now works on both novels and screenplays, and divides his time between England and Spain. He is married to philosopher Chon Tejedor and has two children.

It feels very much like starting from scratch: I'll need a new agent, new publisher... that stuff is daunting. But at the same time there's the sense of having spent the time getting to grips with what I want to write, and how I want to do it; so I think the hiatus was necessary.(less)

Origin Story: Why I started writing

Much of this blog is going to be day-to-day thoughts: what I’m doing, how it’s going, whether the process of translating the voices in my head into words on paper that actually work is happening well or not. But I feel like you’re owed a bit of context too, so you know what you’re getting into. We need some kind of origin story.

It starts with being a reader of stories. I devoured books as a kid: r

This is Le Carré's second novel, and to an extent it shows: it's a lot simpler and less nuanced than some of his later, spy-focused, work. Although George Smiley is the central character, he's here playing a role reminiscent of Poirot or Marple in an ...more

This was my first foray into Smiley territory: I confess I found my way here after watching the excellent Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy film with Gary Oldman in the lead. I'd always been aware of Le Carré's work but had never taken the plunge, and for a ...more

“Sadly, schools deal in the sale and exchange of knowledge, not wisdom."

~ "The Hole”
Guy Burt

“If we could live all our lives in the present, with no recourse to what has gone before or what might yet be, we would be so much the simpler for it. But in fact the here and now of life is all too often the least considered, while thoughts of the past and expectations of the future conspire to tangle our minds with irreconcilable regrets and hopes."
