The Greatcoats series was obviously inspired by medieval Europe; are there any other eras/locales that you have thought about adapting into a fantasy milieu? If so, which and why?
Sebastien de Castell
Actually, Tristia came about more from my desire to ask what an Early Modern European country might look like if it had never undergone the Renaissance (including some of the changes to political thought that the Renaissance brought with it.) It's about a nation getting stuck under the weight of its own unfair systems of power.
As to adapting historical milieus, my settings are always a mélange of influences. They always read as somewhat European or North American, but that's primarily because I'm writing in English (and most of the translations of my books are into European languages.) But I'm generally building a milieu from thematic questions rather than historical ones, and then bring in the pieces that I think will create the right thematic conflicts for the characters.
Best,
Sebastien

Sebastien de Castell:
When the Greatcoats is inevitably made into a series of movies (I would love this), who plays Falcio? I like Chris Pratt or John Simm and my wife likes Chris Hemsworth or Matt Damon. I think all four have the ability to play a man with great moral integrity along with the comedic moments. We both feel that HBO or any other huge network would be thrilled to make this as a follow up to GOT. Good luck.

Just finished Tyrant's Throne and have had a great time with the Greatcoat series! I've been curious for a while and wonder if you'd be willing to share with us all the King's Laws? We get a few of them throughout the series, but I don't believe we've ever got them all! If you aren't willing to give us all of them yet, could you at least tell us as many as you are able that haven't already been mentioned in the books?
