Elena asked Maria V. Snyder:

Hi Maria! I love your books, and characters. I started reading the Study series when I was 16 and have treasured them ever since. Something which struck me about your writing was how engaging you managed to make your fight scenes. I have often found that fighting scenes are difficult to write, do you have any tips? Thanks :)

Maria V. Snyder Hello Elena! So glad to hear my books are treasured :) Fight scenes are hard to write. A couple of things that has helped me for them is I earned a brown belt in Issinryu karate and took fencing classes. But you don't need to do that (unless you want to ;). The best fight scenes have four main ingredients: action, dialogue, inner dialogue and emotion. The action does have to be realistic so I wouldn't watch TV or movies for that as that's all for show.

I have a handout on how to write fight scenes if you would like it - I show how those 4 ingredients work. Message me your email addy and I'll send it along. This is open to all writers!
